Listening to the voice of God through meditative silence to unlock intuition

Recognizing the Voice of God

The very powerful Psalm 139 talks about King David’s special relationship with God. It also tells how David trusted the Lord’s guidance. This trust in the Lord’s voice gave David’s life an extremely clear sense of direction and made him able to direct the ancient kingdom of Israel into its golden age.

In John 10:3–5, Jesus talks about hearing a Voice and indicates that all true followers hear this gentle voice of guidance. Yet listening to the voice of God may not come easily to all, since most people are not taught they are able to recognize and hear the voice of God. Due to this lack of training often people can’t differentiate divine guidance from other the thoughts and messages they receive from worldly sources.

Those wondering how to listen to the voice of God should learn to trust the ways of Spirit and seek its guidance, rather than ignoring Its still small voice and doing what they think best. Isaiah 41 asks one to listen to the voice of the Spirit in silence. Praying for guidance and direction in silence where one can feel the Spirit’s presence is the right way to do it. In fact, calming the mind, letting go of the inherent judgmental attitude, and feeling one with Spirit are the answers to how to discern the voice of God.

Being humble and receptive to the voice of God and having faith in Spirit, along with believing we truly deserve the Divine voice of guidance, is the way to get answers to what we seek. Prayers can help; though repetitive verbal prayers we learn during childhood often aren’t productive.  Rather, we need to pray in silence, as what Matthew 6:6 teaches us: “But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you” (NRSV).
